2022-2023 SBCSC Scholarships
Every year, the South Bay Chinese Service Club (SBCSC) awards scholarships to exemplary high school graduating seniors of Chinese descent. Students residing in Fremont, Newark, or Union City, CA with an unweighed GPA of at least 3.0 (or 2.5 for “need-based scholarships” applicants) are eligible to apply. Students residing outside of the tri-city area are also eligible to apply if their parents or grandparents are members of SBCC in good standing. Applicants will need to submit their application online (which includes a personal essay) along with a letter of recommendation (submitted by a teacher or mentor but not peers, relatives, or family members) and an official seventh semester transcript (submitted by the school office or official transcript service site).
This year, the Chinese Immersion Parents’ Council of Fremont (CIPCF) is partnering with SBCSC to offer several scholarships to graduating seniors who have previously completed the Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP) of the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD). Seniors eligible to apply to the CIPCF scholarship need not be of Chinese descent, but may be eligible to apply for other SBCSC Scholarships if they are also of Chinese descent.
IMPORTANT: Do not wait till the last minute to submit the application and the transcript. Schools often need more than a week to process transcript requests and if we have received your application but have not received one or both of the required documents, we will not be able to send you a reminder to give you enough time to follow up on the rest of the documents to make the deadline!
The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize these talented students for their hard work and achievements, and to provide encouragement for the challenges ahead. Scholarship award recipients are selected based on their academic achievement, leadership qualities, extracurricular achievements, community services, and a number of other factors. This year, we will be awarding one or more “need-based” scholarships to qualified applicants from low income households. To qualify for the “need-based scholarship awards”, you family’s maximum annual income cannot exceed the following:
- Family size of 6 or more: $135,000
- Family size of 5: $125,000
- Family size of 4: $116,000
- Family size of 3: $107,000
- Family size of 2: $104,000
The actual number of scholarships will be determined by the amount of donations received. In 2022, thanks to the generous contributions by our major sponsors and individual donors, our organization awarded $41,000 scholarships to 22 students. That is an increase of more than $6,000 from the total scholarship amounts awarded in 2021. The minimum scholarship award amount is $1,000 for ALL SELECTED RECIPIENTS. Please visit our 2022 Scholarships Recap web page to view last year's award recipients and the photo gallery.
The scholarship award recipients will be announced at the 2023 SBCSC Scholarship Awards Banquet to be held at Pearl Bay restaurant, Fremont on Wednesday evening, April 19, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. if permissible by local and state laws. All scholarship winners will be invited to the banquet and will receive a complimentary dinner. The program will include a keynote speaker who will address the students, parents, and guests. This is one event that you do not want to miss in 2023. We will comply with the CDC guidelines at the time.
