2024 Chinese Bunkhouse Visit

Members of the Fremont City Council (5th left to right), Mayor Lily Mei, Councilmember Yang Shao, Councilmember Raj Salwan, and SBCC Board Member Joe Woo visited the Chinese Bunkhouse at the historic Shinn Park during the Harvest Moon Festival on 9/15/2024.

One of the displays at the Bunkhouse information booth recognized the former Gerry Low-Sabado (former SBCC President from 2005-2006) as an original Bunkmate.

During the Harvest Moon Festival at the Fremont Shinn Historical Park on September 15, 2024, members of SBCC and Fremont City Council visited the historical Chinese Bunkhouse in support of its effort to preserve this historical structure where the early Chinese immigrants helped build our community since the 1940’s. The Shinn family moved the Shinn China Camp up to their barnyard in the 1950’s. The historical Shinn Ranch, established in 1856, became a city park in the 1960’s.

“Preserving the culture and customs of the Chinese heritage” is part of our Mission Statements. SBCC believes that we should support the preservation of the Bunkhouse to give a voice to these forgotten people who helped build our community.
