The South Bay Chinese Service Club scholarships award program entered into its 52nd year of awarding scholarships to exemplary high school students of Chinese descent at our local community.  Children of club members and students residing in Fremont, Newark, or Union City are eligible to apply.  The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize these talented students for their hard work and achievements, and to provide encouragement for the challenges ahead.  The applicants are carefully evaluated based on academic achievement, leadership, community service, and extracurricular achievement. This year, we will also award some scholarships based upon financial need.

We are asking for your financial support to help us to reach out to our best students.  Our recipients are an exceptional group of highly motivated future leaders - each year it is difficult to select just a few.  During the 2021-2022 school year, with the generous donations from many of our members and major sponsors (which include individual members as well as corporate sponsors such as Republic Services, Dutra Enterprises, and Citizens for Better Community), our organization awarded a record total of $41,000 scholarship awards to 22 students.  For the 2022-2023 school year, with your help, our goal is to generate an equal or higher amount for our scholarship fund.

The scholarship awards are usually presented to the award recipients during the annual scholarship banquet held on Wednesday evening at a local Restaurant.  Our guests includes applicants, donors, former award winners, club members, school counselors, local officials, and a keynote speaker.  After two years of cancellation of the Scholarship Awards Banquet due to the pandemic, we were finally able to hold the banquet on April 27, 2022. A record-breaking crowd attended the 2022 Award Banquet celebrating the 22 students when they received their scholarship awards in person.

The names of the donors who make this program possible will be included in the program and other printed materials if the donations are received by March 1, 2023. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. All donors will receive written acknowledgment for their tax-deductible contributions.  (Tax ID #94-2963262)

Due to the steep price increase of the banquet at the restaurants, we are forced to adjust our “complimentary dinners for donors” policy this year in order to retain more of the donation amount for the students’ scholarships.

This year, donation amount of $2,000 or more will receive 2 complimentary dinners plus the option to purchase up to 8 dinners at a discounted price of $20 each. Donations of $1000 will receive 2 complimentary dinners plus the option to purchase up to 4 dinners at $20 each. Donations of $500 will have the option to purchase 4 dinners at $20 each. Donations of $300 will have the option to purchase 2 dinners at $20 each. Donations of $150 will have the option to purchase 1 dinner at $20. The regular price for a dinner this year is $45 ($450 per table of 10 - the exact amount we will be paying the restaurant).  All scholarship recipients will receive a complimentary dinner and they may purchase one dinner at the $20 discounted price for a parent or guardian who will be accompanying them to the Award Banquet on April 19, 2023. Please see the 2023 Scholarship Banquet Information page for more details.
