2021-2022 SBCSC Scholarships

NOTE: The deadline for accepting Scholarship application (March 1, 2022) has expired. We are no longer accepting applications at this time. The information in this page is for those who have already applied and for others who may be interested in next year’s scholarship program.

Every year, the South Bay Chinese Service Club (SBCSC) awards scholarships to exemplary high school graduating seniors of Chinese descent.  Students residing in Fremont, Newark, or Union City, CA are eligible to apply.  Students residing outside of the tri-city area are also eligible to apply if their parents or grandparents are members of SBCC in good standing since the fiscal year 2020-2021.  Applicants will need to submit their application online (which includes a personal essay) along with a letter of recommendation (submitted by a teacher or mentor directly to us) and an official seventh semester transcript (submitted by the school office directly to us).

To learn more about our Scholarship Program, you can view this 2021 video (approx. 6 min.) that highlights this long-running scholarship program through the years.

IMPORTANT: Do not wait till the last minute to submit the application and the transcript.  Schools often need more than a week to process transcript requests and if we have received your application but have not received one or both of the required documents, we will not be able to send you a reminder to give you enough time to follow up on the rest of the documents to make the deadline!

The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize these talented students for their hard work and achievements, and to provide encouragement for the challenges ahead.  Scholarship award recipients are selected based on their academic achievement, leadership qualities, extracurricular achievements, community services, and a number of other factors.  This year, we will be awarding one or more “need-based” scholarships to qualified applicants from low income households. The actual number of scholarships will be determined by the amount of donations received.  In 2021, thanks to the generous contributions by our major sponsors and individual donors, our organization awarded one $3,000 scholarships, one $2,500 scholarship, four $2,000 scholarship, four $1,500 scholarships, and fifteen $1,000 scholarships to 25 students for a total of $34,500 in awards.  That is an increase of $10,000 from the total scholarship amounts awarded in 2020. This is also the first year we are increasing our minimum scholarship award amount to $1,000 for ALL SELECTED RECIPIENTS. Please visit our 2021 Scholarships Recap web page to view last year's award recipients and the photo gallery.

The scholarship award recipients will be announced at the 2022 SBCSC Scholarship Awards Banquet to be held at a local restaurant (TBD) on Wednesday evening, April 27, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. if permissible by local and state laws.  All scholarship winners will be invited to the banquet and will receive a complimentary dinner. The program will include a keynote speaker who will address the students, parents, and guests.  This is one event that you do not want to miss in 2022. To alleviate concerns of students, parents, guests, and staff members, we will be requiring all banquet attendees, including award recipients, to be fully vaccinated.

NOTE: IF YOU ARE SELECTED TO BE AN AWARD RECIPIENT, YOU MUST BE PRESENT AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY TO RECEIVE THE AWARD. We will comply with the CDC guidelines issued at the time. To alleviate concerns from students, parents, guests, and our staff, we will be requiring all banquet attendees to be fully vaccinated. Exceptions may be made for valid medical reasons attested in writing by certified physicians. Proof of vaccination may be required at the time of RSVP. Please make sure you are available to attend the banquet on that day and that you will be fully vaccinated by that date (except for medical exemptions) if you would like to apply for the scholarships.
